During transcription, the DNA double helix is unwound and separated into two strands. One of the strands serves as a template for the synthesis of mRNA. RNA polymerase, an enzyme that catalyzes the formation of RNA, binds to the DNA template strand and begins to synthesize a complementary strand of mRNA. The mRNA molecule is created in a 5' to 3' direction, with nucleotides being added one at a time to the growing chain.

As the mRNA molecule is synthesized, it is processed and modified before leaving the nucleus. This includes the addition of a 5' cap and a poly-A tail, which help to protect the mRNA from degradation and facilitate its transport to the ribosome.

The second step in protein synthesis is translation. This process occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell and involves the conversion of the genetic information carried by mRNA into a sequence of amino acids, which are then used to build a protein.

Translation begins when the mRNA molecule binds to a ribosome. The ribosome reads the genetic code carried by the mRNA and uses it to assemble a chain of amino acids. This process requires the help of transfer RNA (tRNA) molecules, which carry specific amino acids to the ribosome based on the codons (three nucleotides) on the mRNA.

As each tRNA molecule binds to the mRNA, the amino acid it carries is added to the growing chain of amino acids. This process continues until a stop codon is reached on the mRNA, at which point the ribosome releases the completed protein.
